Saint Ignatius' Cave

In one of the caves in this place typical of the landscape of Manresa, in an opening but with a view from the front of the mountain of Montserrat, tradition says that Saint Ignatius of Loyola retired for a time to meditate and write his famous Spiritual Exercises.

Over the years, a simple little cave has become the city's greatest, most ostentatious monument. A large sanctuary has been built literally above the cave, which has become indisputably the key Ignatian site, and one of the universal landmarks of the Jesuit world.

In the cave, landscape and architecture blend surprisingly, forming an artificial façade on Sant Bartomeu hill, which is one of the most visible elements at the entrance to Manresa.

The inner decoration of The Cave Sanctuary has been renovated in 2021. A set of mosaics have been installed  and they are decorating the eight lateral chapels belonging to the church of The Cave of Manresa.
