Plaça Sant Domènec

The Plaça de Sant Domènec is the centre of modern Manresa, emerging from the extension to the city. This square, remodelled a few years ago, was developed in 1936, when the church of Sant Pere Màrtir was demolished, so the foundations of the Gothic construction are still preserved under the modern paving. Two exemplary buildings can be seen in this square. On one side can be found the Torrents House, popularly known as La Buresa, designed by the architect Ignasi Oms i Ponsa in 1905 at the orders of one of the richest families of the beginning of the 20th century: the Torrents. The building is a recreation of a mansion in Neogothic style and reflects the fantasy image held of the medieval past at the time.
And, on the other side of the square, is Cal Jorba, in art deco style. This building, which for many years houses the popular Jorba department store, is dominated by a central body in the form of a tower, with a typical clock surrounded by allegorical reliefs and guarded by two eagles. Today the recently renovated building is occupied by offices.
