Valentí Masachs Geology Museum

The "Valentí Masachs" Geology Museum of the Technical University of Catalonia is located in the Manresa Technical Engineering Higher Education College. It was founded in 1980, and Dr. Valentí Masachs Alavedra was its first director. The first mineralogy and palaeontology cases, with which the museum was opened, were put together with his private collection of fossils and minerals, together with examples of minerals collected by members of the museum themselves
Cases with mineral applications were incorporated in 1993, marking a new stage in the museums educational range aimed at teachers and students at all levels, completed in 1995 with new exhibitions on the use of stone materials.
The existing cases have been renewed down to today with different themes, such as: meteorites, agates, new organisation of fossils according to geo-chronological classification, minerals and people (El Coltan), diamonds and their uses, metamorphism, Gaudí, living things that form rocks, radioactivity, etc.
The museum currently has a collection of about 5000 minerals, 2000 rocks and 3000 fossils. This collection has largely been built up from examples found by members of the museum team themselves, donated private collections, exchanges and some acquisitions.
